Brazil A-Term - Day #6: A Hike Across the Beach

    Overall, today was a calm day in terms of work. The plan was to hike around and explore the town and nearby areas. As I had already gone on a little adventure by foot beforehand, I chose some interesting places to stop by while exploring the area. The first thing that I wanted to check out was a waterfall, in the middle of the forest, far up the hill. As we wanted to explore various different places and this waterfall was so far away, we decided to leave it as our last stop of the day. While exploring one of the trails with the Worldpackers, I had found a very thin part of the trail that led to this very small, rocky beach. Since the trail was all the way across town, we thought that we would get to know the town very well as we would walk past various points of interest. We began our exploration at around 12:00, after a good breakfast and some blog writing. On our walk to the trail, we found many different hotels, churches, restaurants, small shops.

    Experiencing both the poorer and richer areas of Maresias, I came to notice that the economy in the richer areas is based more on tourism, and not as many cheap goods were being sold as in the poorer areas. It took us a lot longer to arrive at the trail than I first thought. When we got to the trail, we hiked up for a few minutes until I found the smaller trail leading to the beach. When we got there we found something that wasn't there the first time. Fishing boats, fishing nets, and other fishing equipment. But emphasis on the fishing nets. Lots and lots of those nets. When we got there we relaxed for a bit, climbed up a few rocks, relaxed some more, then we left. it started drizzling a little bit and then suddenly an abundance of mosquitos appeared. At this point, it was already getting dark, which is something that was not a part of the plan. We started walking back home as there was not enough time to go to the waterfall. When we got home we were very tired after all that hiking, we got ready for bed, and prepared for the next day.

      Houston is hot, sure, but the major difference between Houston heat and Maresias heat is grand yet hard to define. I remember the 2011 drought like it was yesterday. Brazil A-Term - Day #7:

     Today is the start of the second week of our A-Term. The way we organized the schedule was that all of the activities from the first week would then repeat in the second week. So today we did the same thing that we did last week, Working in the Unbottling Minds vegetable garden and Spanish classes. But before the activities started, today, Fabby and I decided to provide breakfast for all the kids. Breakfast at Unbottoling Minds is always a great experience. Lots of laughs, conversations, and eating. Anytime there is breakfast being served, the kids always show up early and are very eager to start their day with friends.      Since this was the second time I was doing this activity, I felt a lot more comfortable working with my hands, interacting with the kids, and participating in the activity. Brazil A-Term - Day #2: Garden and Spanish by Bernardo Guerra

 We started our first day of work with a refreshing breakfast, ready to be productive. Our activities today included working in the Unbotelling Minds vegetable garden and Spanish lessons, both of which were with groups of young kids. We arrived at the Unbottling Minds headquarters at 8:30AM where we got to meet all the  Worldpackers and Unbotelling Minds crew . Currently, there are six Worldpackers staying at the headquarters, five Brazilians from different places in Brazil, and one Angolan-Portuguese young lady. At around 9:00AM we started the first activity: working in the vegetable garden. A group of five kids showed up very early eager to begin. Fabricio and I along with three other Unbottling Minds crew members led this activity.
